Gera makes history with its new art gallery Kunsthaus
Collector couple Welle make a first-class donation to the art collection
"With the new gallery Kunsthaus we will be making history in the city and, thereby, create another positive image of Gera that will last for decades," mayor Dr. Norbert Vornehm was convinced on 19th October, when the concept for the new Kunsthaus in the building of the former state central bank was presented.
Mayor Dr. Norbert Vornehm is delighted: The artist Rainer Fetting and the gallerist Karl Pfefferle are present when the art-collecting couple Ingrid and Werner Welle (from the left) make their donation. The building of the former state central bank in Gera, designed by the English architect David Chipperfield creates brand new perspectives with an exhibition space of 1,400 square meters for visual and applied arts within Gera's museum scene. "Having these really important cultural institutions of our city – from the theatre to the house where Otto Dix was born – close to each other amidst the attractive landscape of a park, is a unique concept in urban construction," the mayor emphasised.
The new Kunsthaus fits very harmonically into this ensemble and it will characterise the city with a multitude of excellent exhibition events. These will thematically relate to the surroundings as well as to the heterogeneous collection profile of Gera's Kunstsammlung. Besides Otto Dix (who, of course, will make up a major part of the gallery), showing contemporary art works and the correlation of visual and applied arts with music, ballet and plays is planned.
