Relax and unwind in the Hofwiesen park on the former premises of the Bundesgartenschau 2007, an area of 300,000m2. The former green fields in the courtyard turned into an attractive urban park with a large playground, quiet spots to sit back, restaurants, many sports and leisure activities including mini golf, and the renovated Villa Jahr as a special treasure. During the summer months, the Viola stage offers a range of interesting events. Take a stroll through the park that keeps its beauty through all seasons.
The Otto-Dix City Gera still has a lot more to offer: the house where the painter and graphic artist Otto Dix was born right next to the park in the oldest and at the same time one of the most beautiful city districts Untermhaus, the castle keep Bergfried of the former castle Schloss Osterstein. Finest art with ballet, music theatre, plays, puppet theatre, and concerts can be enjoyed in Gera’s gorgeous theatre. The kitchen garden with the Orangerie together with the art gallery has emerged to a real baroque treasure.
The Art-Nouveau theatre and its forecourt have had their old splendour restored. Most points of interest are only steps away from the park as is the Hofwiesenbad swimming bath, which is great to cool down on hot summer days. From there the city centre is quickly reached by foot or by tram, so you can continue to walk through Gera and discover more: The underground caves Geraer Höhler, the magnificent Salvator Church, shopping centres and bars with the hospitality so typical for Thüringen, also Gera’s Gründerzeit villas (from the German Founder Epoch), the Waldzoo (zoo in the woods) with the ridable miniature railway, and the villa Haus Schulenburg by Henry van de Velde.
What’s more: With financial help of the EU’s urban-development programme URBAN II an area in the size of 5.3km2 between the city districts Untermhaus and Debschwitz was revitalised in regards to city development, economy and social services.
