The Otto-Dix City Gera shows what its made of

Enjoy a stroll through the historically well-developed city where the painter and graphic artist Otto Dix was born. Not only the gorgeous City Pharmacy at the Market Place is unique with its exuberantly decorated bay windows, but also the stunningly beautiful Gründerzeit villas from the German Founder Epoch in the 19th century and the underground caves Geraer Höhler. Not any less appealing is Gera’s cultural strip: A cultural landscape that could be enriched over centuries shapes the face of the city. Gera’s museums, namely the art gallery with the Orangerie and the birth house of Otto Dix, the City Museum, the Museum of Natural History and also the Museum of Applied Arts have a history of more than 125 years and present exclusive exhibitions. The house where Otto Dix was born in the city district Untermhaus together with the Orangerie in baroque design is a memorial and an exhibition venue of the art gallery Kunstsammlung in Gera.

The Art-Nouveau-style theatre guarantees superior appreciation of art as it was re-opened in April 2007 after an extensive restoration. People from Gera certainly know how to celebrate as many occasions as possible. We have the International Firework Festival “Flammende Sterne”, the Hofwiesenparkfest festival, the Höhlerfest festival and many others. And don’t miss to pay a visit to the castle keep of the former castle Schloss Osterstein.
